"Driving a team of the Austins immaculately trained and extremely lovable huskies was one of the most memorable adventures I have ever experienced.""
- Jeri Schmidt, NY
Some rules and regulations about the Iditarod, Part 2
The Iditarod Trail Committee places great emphasis on the fact that the dogs involved in the race are not to be treated in a cruel or inhumane way. They must be fed and taken care of, and sick, tired or injured dogs are not to continue in the race. There are very strict drug enforcement policies before, during and even after the race is completed, to make sure illnesses are not being hidden at the expense of the health and safety of dogs and mushers.
In addition, the ITC (Iditarod Trail Committee) does not penalize racers who stop to help other mushers along the trail when there is an emergency, as long as this is explained at each checkpoint.
